A Winter Fling with the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 in Tokyo
Tokyo in the winter has a special kind of magic—crisp air, golden sun, and that cinematic light that just begs to be photographed. For this trip, I decided to bring along a lens I’d been curious (and honestly, a little intimidated) about: the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2. Spoiler alert: it’s a beast—in more ways than one.
Shooting Wide Open in Full Sun? No Problem.
I paired the Viltrox with a K&F Variable ND filter, which turned out to be the move of the trip. The combo let me keep that juicy f/1.2 aperture wide open, even in the middle of the day when Tokyo’s winter sun was out in full force. Shallow depth of field + dreamy bokeh + crisp light = chef’s kiss. It made mundane street corners feel like film stills.
What I Loved: Crisp, Creamy, and Fast AF
Let’s start with the good stuff. This lens is seriously sharp. Even wide open at f/1.2, it held detail in a way that made my little photography brain squeal. I’d shoot ramen bowls indoors, then pivot to grab a candid of someone walking under lanterns outside, and everything stayed tack-sharp where I needed it. The autofocus was snappy too—impressive for a third-party lens this fast.
And that bokeh? Whew. The background blur was buttery smooth and made every shot feel a little more luxe. Whether it was city lights at night or just a vending machine in a quiet alley, this lens gave everything a touch of drama.
The Trade-Off: Big Lens Energy
Now for the not-so-sweet part: this thing is chunky. On my Fujifilm X-T5, it felt front-heavy, and after walking around for hours (which is all you do in Tokyo), I was definitely feeling it in my wrist. It’s not a casual, throw-in-your-jacket-pocket kind of lens. If you’re traveling light or trying to be discreet with your street photography, it’s… noticeable.
I also wouldn’t call it a “grab-and-go” lens unless you’re really committed to the look. The weight, combined with the need to use ND filters in daylight if you want that f/1.2 look, means it takes a little more prep to get the most out of it.

Final Thoughts
The Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 is like that friend who’s super talented but demands a lot of attention. It’s beautifully sharp, crazy fast, and delivers top-tier image quality, especially for portraits and cinematic street shots. But it’s also heavy, a bit bulky, and not the most discreet travel companion.
If you’re okay with carrying the extra weight, it absolutely delivers. Just maybe pack some wrist support—or take more snack breaks, which, let’s be real, is never a bad idea in Tokyo.
Have you tried this lens? Would you travel with it? Let’s nerd out in the comments.
